Below are some of the small bronze moquettes from the Olympics Art Exhibitions. Because the Olympics Committees forbade artworks of the actual athletes or anything relating to the olympics, Vince created another olympics. In this Olympics these bronze maquettes of elephants, hares and others joined the olympics in their own way.
As the exhibition travelled from place to place it changed. As a rolling stone gathers moss. Later creations dealt with the official and political declaration that this was to be the Greenest of Green Olympics.

Stephen Vince Resume
Born and educated in England. Specialised in the Sciences at school, winning first the Music Prize and later the Science Prize. First degree in the Agricultural Sciences. Studied History of Art then left England to paint and sculpt in Australia during 1988 where Nature took over as his mentor. He then lived and worked in Thailand and subsequently Hongkong. He was then granted a green card by the American Government. He developed the concept of the 'Sculpture Safari'. The first group included twenty line-out sculptures of endangered species, shown as a complete exhibition within their natural surroundings. (The line-out is an often almost invisible metal drawing in the sky and so is a parallel to the near extinction of these species in reality). The concept follows his need and desire to take his art to people and at the same time to involve Nature. He attempts to work in all dimensions possible, from one to four or more. A recent development and intent in his Art has been to take it to the public. The sculpture 'The Bhopal Enigma' physically joining in a March along Mile End road to Bow, London in July 2012. And in 2013 other sculptures have joined processions in the streets of London. |
The Sculpture Safaris
began in the Mai Po marshes on the Hongkong/China border. This was filmed by Michael Pitts with poems by the late Martin Booth - producing the book and film 'Life Confronted'. The next major exhibition was in and around Gstaad, Switzerland and high into its Alpine peaks, as high as the Eagle Club at the top of the Wassengraat. This was followed by the Sculpture Safari at Lowestoft, Britain’s Most Easterly Point and at The University of East Anglia in Norwich. From there in 1997 the Safari went to the mountainside estates of Lord Glasgow, reaching down to the banks of the Clyde, and held simultaneously with a retrospective exhibition put on by the North Ayrshire Museums, Scotland. The Sculpture Safari was last seen amidst important gardens on the approach to the United Nations in New York, USA; an exhibition organised by New York Art Dealer Odile Gorse. Sadly Odile Gorse never returned the sculptures so they have disappeared along with the creatures they represent, never seen again since that exhibition by the United Nations. There were unconfirmed reports that the Safari was later seen in a gallery on Nantucket island, USA. In 1997, the line-out sculpture Running Tigers with Stripes was selected for the Monte Carlo Sculpture Biennale, Monaco. The Line-out sculptures developed from two projects in the Far East; the one of a 40 foot suspended whale, developed for the Atrium of a major shopping centre in Ap Lei Chau, and the other, a 60 foot water buffalo for Ho Chi Min City, Vietnam. In 1996,he completed the line sculpture, The Scorpion Figures for the major property company Shaftesbury PLC in London. (This work contains several symbols and references). The Reflective Sculptures The Bhopal Enigma is one of a group of sculptures made from reflective stainless steel which also contains a number of evaluations. |

Stephen Vince has developed an important form of Public Participation Sculpture, which involves the public both physically and cerebrally in each sculpture. The first such piece was the Ogham Log, the trunk of a rain-forest tree found washed up on a Hongkong beach. He stood it up, and asked the Hongkong Public to bring leaves , write on the leaves their feelings for the plight of the world’s forests, and place the leaves around the sculpture. Later some leaves would be cast into bronze, with these inscriptions. 10,000 people came in the ten days to write on the leaves.
The Paper Tiger is another important Public Participation sculpture, the public creating a savanna of tall grass around the tiger, with their opinions inscribed on the blades of grass. The public displays of the sculpture have included The World Bank in Washington, USA, The VAC of the Hongkong Museum of Art and Whitehall Palace, Westminster, London.
